Begin dit jaar viel 'ie opeens ook hier op: Greg Gillis uit Pittsburgh, die zich als meestermixer Girl Talk noemt. Zijn debuut Night Ripper uit 2006 alweer was al de beste, lange mix met mashups (twee tot drie liefst verschillende nummers passend gemixed) sinds de werkstukken van 2ManyDJ's. Op Night Ripper werden tientallen klassieke (old school) hiphoptracks en alternatieve gitaarhits uit de jaren negentig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, The Verve, Weezer) naadloos aan elkaar geregen. Zijn nieuwe album Feed The Animals biedt Gillis geheel volgens Radiohead-In-Rainbows-model aan: je bepaalt helemaal zelf hoeveel geld je voor de download van dit mix-album over hebt, geleverd in de vorm vorm van 320-kbps mp3's.
En ja, nul dollar invullen mag ook. Maar dan moet je wel even de meerkeuzevraag beantwoorden waarom je niets betaalt ('ik betaal in principe niet voor muziek, ik ben pers, ik hou eigenlijk niet van Girl Talk'). Beantwoord gerust die vraag, want als Night Ripper al sensationeel was, is Feed The Animals ronduit verbluffend in al z'n mix-inventiviteit. Betaal je tenminste tien dollar, dan krijg je op de releasedatum van 23 september het album op cd thuis gestuurd.
Op Feed The Animals vormen eerder beroemde popklassiekers de decors voor tientallen r 'n b en rapsamples. Door de mangel qua pop gaan onder meer: Nothing Compares 2 U van Sinead O'Connor, A Winter Shade Of Pale van Procul Harum, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic van The Police, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Sunday Morning van The Velvet Underground, maar ook Faith No More's Epic, One van Metallica en Paranoid Android van Radiohead. Ik vraag me af in hoeverre al die samples gecleared zijn. 
Voor een opsomming van alle gebruikte hiphoptracks in deze virtuoze, duizelingwekkende mix annex popquiz, moet u bij hiphopcollega Nancy zijn. Ik herken nog wel oudjes als Blackstreet's No Diggity, Here Comes The Hotstepper van Ini Kamoze, Push It van Salt 'n Pepa (door Nirvana's Lithium heen) Body Movin' van Beastie Boys of Woo-Hah! Got You All In Check van Busta Rhymes. Ook leuk: Britney Spears' Gimme More in de mix met Sexy Boy van het Franse Air. Enfin, als de donder dit geniale werkje downloaden doet u hier.
